FINAL PRODUCTION TASKS
filming diary
day 1 of filming - 24/01/16
Our first day of filming was okay. We worked with Huldah and Tunde to film the scenes in which Huldah is hanging out with her love interest who is currently her friend, and she becomes annoyed when he speaks on the phone to his own love interest and his attention moves away from her. We filmed in various areas of Canary Wharf, such as the the main shopping centre, jubilee place, crossrail place, a coffee shop and by the fountains. A challenge we faced was getting permission from security to film, however we were able to gain permission by showing them our student IDs and explaining to them that we were using the footage for an A2 media project. However, they were more wary of us using the tripod as it posed a health and safety risk to us and other people.
Here are some screenshots from the scenes we recorded:

Next time when filming, I think we should use a wider range of shots such as high angle shots, low angle shots and establishing shots to show more of a variety. We also would need to make more use of the tripod as many of the shots we filmed will be too shaky to use; since we now have a dolly we can use this to do tracking shots. Since the majority of the shots we took were very shaky, we will most likely re-film what we have done.
day 2 of filming - 03/02/16
Day 2 of filming took place in Brick Lane after school; we could not film for very long as by the time we reached our location it was already getting dark, and we had school the next day. Additionally, others in my group were unfortunately unable to make it due to after school clubs. However, this was the first day we filmed the performance part of the video and we were able to get some good footage, my favourite one being the long shot.
day 3 of filming - 06/02/16
A large amount of filming was done for the performance part of our music video on this day. We were able to film in multiple locations in Southbank, and then go to Brick Lane for more locations. We made more use of the camera equipment and were able to film a wide range of shots. However, we were unable to film on the rooftop at One New Change as it was very windy therefore they closed the roof.
day 4 of filming - 17/02/16
During day 4, my group and Huldah and Tunde filmed the first scene at Canary Wharf and the drinking scene at my house. We were able to get a wide range of shots such as close ups, over the shoulder shots and two shots.
day 5 of filming - 18/02/16
Day 5 of filming took place at Crossrail Place, Canary Wharf. We filmed the last scene in which Huldah rejects Tunde, and we were planning to film another large portion of our footage, however we were unable to as one of our actors fell sick and could not make it. We filmed many more POV shots on this day as it was the last scene and we wanted the audience to feel as though they are part of the story and put themselves in the character's shoes.
day 6
Day 6 took place around Canada Water. On this day we filmed Tunde and Courtney's scenes. Originally, we were planning to film part of it at my house, however as it was a school night and we were running out of time we had to instead ask to film in a friend's house that was close by. We then went to film part of it in the cafe in Southwark library. Fortunately, we finished all of our filming this day and we had more than enough footage to use.
first draft
Final Cut Pro X was used to edit the music video. In this the clips could be trimmed and arranged in the correct order, effects could be added for example the effect while Tunde was drinking to reinforce the idea that he is becoming more and more drunk, and transitions such as fade to black were used. Text was also added to the video at the start to show the artist's name and the song's name, the text used is the same font on my digipak and poster (Neou) which shows the link between all of them; this is also done by some of the locations being the same and the outfits being very similar.
FEEDBACK FROM OTHERS
WHAT WENT WELL:
WHAT WENT WELL:
- Narrative is clear
- Video is dense/engaging therefore the audience does not get bored
- Mise en scene (costume, location etc) reinforce genre well, especially in the performance
- Wide range of shots used
- Footage of artist singing is in sync with the music
- Some shots need to be made longer e.g. when the text is sent, so that the audience can read it in time
- Fill in the gaps
- Something else should be put at the start to signify that the artist and the guy she is interested in are just friends e.g. a text asking him to help her study
after first draft
My group and I decided we would go back out to film more performance shots as we felt as though we only had about three performance shots that were good enough to use, and in the draft it made the video look too repetitive. As last time we could not go to the rooftop at One New Change, we decided to go there again and luckily we could go to the top and the weather was good. This was also because we checked the weather forecast before planning the day so that we would not go all the way for the rooftop to be closed. We also bought and were planning to use a red smoke grenade as we were inspired by other videos to use it, however we could not find a suitable place to use it that was isolated and we were unable to get permission in time; therefore we did not want to risk using it.

Here is a video with examples of camera shots that we took during filming, some of the clips in this did not make it into the music video.

final edit
The quality of the video was quite low, so the video codec had to be changed.
The quality of the video still seemed to be quite low after doing this, but after taking the whole project, copying it and pasting it into a new project, the video became high quality.
Overall, I believe that the final music video has come out very well. We used a range of shots and locations that worked well and it was edited well. The narrative is slightly different to the blocked plan, one of the reasons for this is because we felt as though parts of the blocked plan could be improved and made more clear for the audience. After asking our media class about the narrative in the music video, they said it was very clear and understandable. Additionally, as one of the actors fell ill on the day we were supposed to film a scene with all of them, we realised we did not have time to gather all the actors together again as they were busy at different times. By adding the short clip of Tunde looking drinking with a clip of him and the artist (Huldah) together on top of that (this was done by putting the clip of Huldah and Tunde on top and lowering the opacity of it so that both clips could be seen) the audience are likely to decode that the more drunk Tunde became, the more he began thinking about her. Many of the clips used at the end of the video are low angle shots of Huldah, which signifies that she became more confident and empowered after realising that she did not need Tunde and that she was better off without him.
