MUSIC VIDEO PLANNING
This page features the planning I have make for my music video. This includes an analysis of the lyrics of the song chosen, group ideas and the music video's concept, mise-en-scene planning and the actors chosen. The page will also have a shot list, troubleshooting and a risk assessment, as well as the storyboard.

chosen song |
lyrics |
This song is about a woman who is interested in a man, however this man is already in a relationship with someone else. The woman believes that she would be better for the guy who is taken and that she can make him happier than his girlfriend can. She does not mind being his secret or his bit on the side, as long as she can please him. My group and I like the beat of this song and we feel as though we could make a video with an interesting storyline out of it. |
[Pre-Hook]
What if I told you I was true? And 'bout it, 'bout it too If I told you that I could do it better What if I told you I was trill? Way doper than a pill What if I told you that you need to forget her? [Hook] Tell me about the little things, the little things That I know I could do (better) The little things, the little things That I know I could do The little things, the little things That I know I could do (better) The little things, the little things That I know I could do [Verse 1] We can keep it on the low No need to take it slow I'm a real one, ain't tellin' no one I'm going down you down to go? Where you gonna be? And where you wanna be You got a thing on me We can have fun I ain't tellin' no one Trust me wait and see [Bridge] You want this? Get up, get up I keep it better, better All that was with us, with us You a fly a** n****, n**** [Pre-Hook] + [Hook] [Verse 2] Real n***** do real things So I am with the games We can get down Make the haters sit down Until it ain't gon' change You love the things I do And how I ride it too I never quit now N**** hear this s*** now I always keep it cool [Bridge] + [Pre-Hook] + [Hook] |
music video concept
The artist is facing relationship problems, as the guy she has feelings for is currently in a relationship with another girl. She feels as though she is second best and is on the sideline, although she believes that she is better for him. Throughout the video, we see her attempts to gain his attention, although these attempts go unnoticed. The artist is jealous of the girl that the boy is with; the audience are aware of this conflict although the male character may not see it. By the end of the video, the artist has come to the realisation that she does not need him, or any man for that matter. When he eventually asks if they can be together after breaking up with the other girl, she rejects his offer, which will be a plot twist. She gets rid of their past by destroying the photograph of them together and the video ends with them going their separate ways.

POTENTIAL LOCATIONS TO FILM
casting
lead female |
The main female character will be played by our artist, Huldah Zoe. The fact that she is the artist and will be playing the lead character rather than her not being in the storyline gives off the idea that the song is based off of her real life experiences, which is likely to make it more relatable for other people. |
Roles
Camera operator: Miatta, Sophie and Stephanie
Editing: Miatta. The whole group will contribute to the editing of the video, however I will be willing to physically complete the work in order to ensure narrative continuity. I have had experience editing/creating different types of videos before on Final Cut and other similar softwares such as iMovie, therefore I volunteered to use the skills I have learned by doing this to put the video together and edit it.
Director: Sophie. She will help to organise the filming and when/where we will film and what day. She will also instruct the actors and the artist on what they will be doing in each scene and how they will be doing it.
Producer: Stephanie. She will chair meetings and shape together plans such as the storyboard, and ensure that filming goes to plan.
Although we have main roles, we will all be active in every role.

shot list
blocked plan
- Begins with our artist looking into the camera
- Flashback of the artist (Huldah) and her love interest (Tunde) together
- Shots of the the other female character (Courtney) with the same love interest - which is the reality
- The artist goes out with friends and bumps into her love interest, they have a conversation but soon after his girlfriend comes back and he says he has to go, leaving the artist annoyed and frustrated
- The artist begins to make small changes to grab his attention, all of which go unnoticed e.g. hair and makeup
- As the artist keeps seeing her love interest with his girlfriend, she becomes more aware of the fact that he doesn't notice her changes and comes to the realisation that she shouldn't have tried so hard to impress him.
- Performance with dancers which shows the transformation in the character's emotions
- She goes to the bathroom to look in the mirror and removes her lipstick - we see this through the reflection of the mirror
- A few days later she receives a text from her love interest asking her if they can meet
- When they meet he tells her that he broke up with his girlfriend, and asks if they can be together
- A montage of how she imagines them together, making the audience believe that she'll say yes
- When she comes back to reality she instead rejects him and walks away
- She destroys the picture of her and her love interest together
Developed plan:
- Huldah and Tunde have a study session in the coffee shop
- They take a photo together on Huldah's snapchat and caption it "study session"
- Huldah goes to the toilet to put on some more makeup, whilst Tunde texts his friends saying that Huldah is "so into" him
- Huldah returns happily, they continue to study before Tunde receives a phonecall from Courtney (his girlfriend), and Huldah becomes annoyed
- Tunde finishes on the phone and tells Huldah that he has to leave, leaving her frustrated
- Courtney and Tunde meet up to spend time together at the rooftop garden and the gallery
- Courtney is sent a photograph by a friend of Tunde and Huldah at their study session taken from Huldah's snapchat, she asks him about it which leads to a small argument
- Tunde reassures her that nothing is happening between them and she eventually gets over it
- Huldah is out with her friends, when she bumps into Tunde who is standing alone outside a shop
- She goes over to speak to him, he looks slightly cautious
- After a while Courtney returns to him with drinks and sees Huldah and Tunde together. She pulls Tunde away
- They argue again, Courtney angrily throws the necklace Tunde gave her at him and leaves
- Tunde is at home when he receives a text from Courtney suggesting that they break up
- Tunde tries to persuade her to not break up with him, but her decision is final
- Tunde texts Huldah telling her that his girlfriend broke up with him, which leads to a small conversation before he asks her if they can meet the next day
- Tunde and Huldah meet up on the next day at the rooftop garden
- They talk to each other for a while before Tunde attempts to hand her the necklace that belonged to Courtney, she looks at him in confusion as she knows it was Courtney's
- Tunde tries to take her hand but she pushes it away and tells him that a relationship between them is not going to happen
- They go their separate ways

Smoke grenades
We got our inspiration to use smoke grenades after watching this music video by Bobby Brackins ft Zendaya and Jeremih. It made the music video look more colourful and was a good touch to engage the audience and make the video look more aesthetically pleasing.
|
The use of smoke grenades can also be seen in Rihanna's 'We Found Love' music video. We feel as though a similar colour (red) would be suitable in our music video as it fits with the colour of the background that we are hoping to film at.
|
School equipment
The school equipment (pens, books etc) will be used in the first scene in which Huldah and her love interest will be studying. This will make it clear to the audience that they are together for school work and to study as classmates and not because they are on a 'date' or they are in a relationship.
Mobile phones
Mobile phones
Phones will be used for the characters to text each other, so that the audience can have more of an idea of what is going on by reading the texts. Huldah will also use her phone to take a picture of the artist in the coffee shop.
Glass/Bottle of alcohol (fake) Locket/Necklace
Glass/Bottle of alcohol (fake) Locket/Necklace
This will be used for the scene after the male character gets dumped by his girlfriend, when he goes home and begins to drink.
|
A locket will be used that originally belonged to the male character's girlfriend, however at the end of the video he will attempt to give it to the artist, which signifies that she is only his rebound.
|
costume
The clothing Huldah will wear in the music video will be very similar to the clothing she wore during the photoshoot. This is casual but common clothing that is seen in hip hop/R&B music videos. We are aiming for her look to reinforce these genres but not in a way that she is sexualised and is showing too much skin.
