THE ARTIST
HULDAH ZOE
17 YEARS OLD EAST LONDON
Huldah Zoe is a singer from East London who enjoys listening to a range of music, from hip-hop and R&B to pop and alternative. Some of her favourite artists are Aaliyah, Usher, Beyonce and Rihanna; she also enjoys afrobeats. We decided to use an R&B/Hip-Hop song with her as we feel as though she represents the Hip-Hop style well, from her look to her interests.
|
We feel that by using Huldah, we are likely to attract a mainstream and niche audience. A mainstream audience will be attracted to the song we use, but a niche audience might be attracted to her style and the locations of the video such as Brick Lane.
|
We felt as though she was best for our music video again due to her style and her enthusiasm to take part in our project. She too is a media student, therefore she's likely to have more of an understanding of the approach we will take and can also give us any advice, feedback or ideas she has in mind.
We feel as though her style also matches with the locations we are planning to use, such as Brick Lane and Camden. She enjoys wearing 90s inspired clothing such as crop tops, flannel shirts, leather jackets and high waisted jeans. This means she will fit in well with the locations which will improve the overall look of the video. |
Values: equality, confidence
Some of Huldah's favourite things include music, fashion and dancing.
Huldah's image is likely to attract a mostly young female audience as they may see her as a role model and aspire to be like her. This may be because of her fashion/style, the fact they can relate to her music or her confidence and personality. It is also likely that the a large amount of her female audience may be black as they feel like they can identify with her (Blumler and Katz) and that she represents their race well in the music industry and is a voice for them, as she will promote her values which links to ideology and culture (Richard Dyer). It is difficult for female artists to be very successful and receive as much support in the hip-hop music industry in comparison to males, therefore many of them have to be sexualised to a point where their music and their musical abilities are overshadowed by their sex appeal. Huldah is a black, female hip hop artist that believes that women should have the freedom of their own image and bodies, however she will challenge the idea that she needs to have a high sex appeal by not being over-sexualised; meaning other people of her race and gender may look up to her for this. They may also be young black artists hoping to do as well as she has, therefore they see her as motivation and encouragement. People may also support her because they agree with and share the same values as her.

I decided to message Huldah some questions to get more of an idea of her recent interests and music & fashion inspirations.

I decided to use Pinterest to gather pictures of my artist's style inspirations, Zendaya and Kylie Jenner to get a better idea of their style and fashion. I then decided to create the pictures into mood boards.
I have noticed that both Kylie and Zendaya's style include a lot of crop tops/jumpers, skinny jeans, ripped jeans, high-waisted trousers and bomber jackets. Kylie wears a lot of body con dresses and heels, meanwhile Zendaya wears leather jackets and trainers a lot of the time. This is similar to the clothing that Huldah wears, and it is evident that her casual clothing is more inspired by Zendaya meanwhile her more formal style is Kylie Jenner inspired.
